鏡頭採用伸縮式鏡筒設計﹐收起時RF600mm F11 IS STM的鏡長分別只有199.5mm，到拍攝時才將鏡頭伸長，方便用家外出時能存放鏡頭在輕便背包中。
RF600mm F11 IS STM採用7組10片光學設計﹐ 第一片鏡片為佳能獨有的第三代無縫雙層衍射光學元件（DO鏡片），能有效消除常見於超遠攝鏡頭的色差﹐以達致高解像度、高反差及高影像質素。鏡頭光圈雖然為f/11固定光圈，但在長焦距下仍能有效虛化背景以突出主體、帶來優美的散景。

DO鏡片
DO是「Diffractive Optics」(衍射光學元件)的縮寫，佳能獨有的DO鏡片具有相反色差特性，當與傳統玻璃鏡片組合時色差能被互相消除，更可達致超越螢石鏡片和UD超低色散鏡片的高色差補償效能；由於DO鏡片同時具有非球面鏡片的修正效果﹐因此只需在此鏡頭上應用一片DO鏡片便可代替多片鏡片的光學特性，開發出小巧而高影像質素的超遠攝鏡頭。
鏡頭採用內對焦設計及配備導螺旋型STM步進馬達，提供高速、高精度自動對焦2及於短片攝錄時提供流暢的短片伺服自動對焦，更支援全時手動對焦。RF600mm F11 IS STM的最近對焦距離為4.5m，最大放大率為0.14倍。
鏡頭內置的光學影像穩定器提供5級3防震效果，可大幅減少長焦距所引致的影像模糊。輕巧的鏡頭加上光學影像穩定器，讓用家能輕鬆以手持拍攝而無需使用三腳架仍能捕捉銳利影像。

控制環

鏡頭配備「對焦距離範圍選擇開關」，可以防止鏡頭對焦非對焦距離的主體，同時於有助加快自動對焦搜索的速度。
